New Delhi: While the participation of Indian cricket legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is still uncertain, it has come to light that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to put Dhoni in the category of uncapped players. The cricket governing body is yet to announce the players’ regulations for the IPL 2025 auction but reports are rife that Dhoni might feature in a new category.
As per a report in The Times of India, the BCCI is set to bring back the old rule, according to which the players who have retired from international cricket for at least five years were placed in the uncapped category. The rule was in function since the inaugural season of the IPL until 2021, when it was scrapped because the rule was never used by any of the franchises.
The news would surely please the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management, as the report further states that retaining the legendary CSK skipper will go easy on their pockets. As per the last retention rules, an uncapped player could be retained for Rs. 4 crores. It is noteworthy that CSK retained Dhoni for a hefty sum of Rs. 12 crores in 2022.
CSK CEO speaks
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan was asked if Dhoni would be treated as an uncapped player in the 2025 IPL auction. “I’ve no idea about it. We’ve not requested for it. They (BCCI) have themselves told us that the ‘uncapped player rule’ may be kept, that’s all. They (BCCI) haven’t announced anything as yet. The rules and regulations will be announced by the BCCI,” TOI quoted Viswanathan as saying.
The statement from the CSK CEO quashed all the reports which stated that the CSK management pushed for the rule during the team meeting between the owners of IPL franchises and BCCI in Mumbai last month.
On his participation in IPL 2025, Dhoni said that he would wait for the player regulations to be announced before taking a final call on it. “There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but it needs to be in the best interest of the team, Dhoni said at a promotional event.
MS Dhoni’s participation in the IPL 2025 has taken another blow as he might be treated as an uncapped player in IPL 2025 if the BCCI decides to bring back the old retention rule ahead of the auction. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
