New Delhi: Paris Olympics gold medallist javeliner Neeraj Chopra was conferred with the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army on Tuesday.
Through its weekly public journal and authorised legal document, the Union government dislcosed that the appointment was made effective on April 16.
“No 3 (E) dated 9th May 2025 in exercise of the powers conferred by Para -31 of the Territorial Army Regulations, 1948, the president is pleased to confer on sEx- Sub Maj Neeraj Chopra, PVSM, Padma Shri, VSM, Village & Post Office Khandra, Panipat, Haryana with effect from 16 April, 2025,” Major General GS Choudhry, Joint Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, said in a statement.
Double Olympic medallist Neeraj was appointed in the rank of Naib Subedar as a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Army on August 26, 2016, He was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 2018 and received the Khel Ratna and Vishisht Seva Medal before being promoted to the rank of Subedar in 2021.
He was promoted to the rank of Subedar Major in 2024, two years after being handed the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, which id the highest peacetime medal of the Indian Armed Force.
Chopra was conferred with India’s fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri in 2022.
Doha meet to be season opener
The former world champion is scheduled to begin his new season at the Doha Diamond League on Friday after which he will participate in the 71st Janusz Kusocinski Memorial meet in Chorzow, Poland, on May 23.
The 27-year-old will also compete in the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in Czech Republic on June 24, after withdrawing from its last two editions with injuries.
He was set to be the face of the inaugural edition of his eponymous athletics meet that was supposed to be held in Bengaluru’s Sree Kanteerava Stadium on May 24 but it had to be indefinitely postponed after border tensions between India and Pakistan.
