New Delhi: Ace Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra has been named the best male javelin thrower in the world in 2024 by a renowned American magazine ‘Track and Field News’. Chopra, who bagged a silver medal for the country at the Paris Olympics 2024, was beaten by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem for the Olympic gold medal in August last year.

The 27-year-old track and field athlete, who has become a household name in the country since the last few years, pipped two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada to achieve the top position in the 2024 rankings published by the California-based magazine. Pakistan’s Nadeem has been ranked fifth as he competed in only one event in 2024 besides the Olympics where he came with a monster throw of 92.97m.

American magazine an authority in track and field circle

The American magazine, which was founded in the year 1948, claims to be ‘The Bible Of The Sport’ and has been publishing world and American rankings in the sport every year since its inception. It is also considered an authority in global track and field circles. The ace Indian athlete also ranked number one in the men’s javelin throw rankings of 2023.

“Reigning leader Neeraj Chopra vs. 2022’s winner Anderson Peters for the top spot was likewise not clear-cut. Chopra didn’t score any DL wins, but was at 3–2 narrowly ahead of Peters,” the magazine wrote.

Chopra did not bag victory at any Diamond League event in 2024, finishing second in Doha, Lausanne and Brussels. Apart from the Olympic silver medal, his only other big win came at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland. Meanwhile, Peters had finished third behind Nadeem and Chopra in Paris Olympics. The ace athlete had bagged three DL events last year in Lausanne, Zurich and Brussels.
