New Delhi: The Neeraj Chopra-organised javelin competition, which India will be hosting in the month of May 2025, has got an endorsement from World Athletics president Sebastian Coe. The star-studded global javelin competition, which is set to witness athletes from all over the globe, will have Olympic silver medallist Chopra in the tournament’s organising team.
At an event recently, Coe said that the javelin competition will help in showcasing India’s ability to host gold-level athletics events. He further said that World Athletics body is delighted to extend its support to the new event that will give an opportunity to fans in India to see their heroes on the home soil, will highlighting India’s ability to stage big events in the future.
Chopra among leading global stars
Neeraj Chopra will be among the leading global stars who will take part in the World Athletics-sanctioned Continental Tour javelin-only competition. The venue for the showpiece event is yet to be finalised but it will see some of the top male and female javelin throwers from the world compete in India for the very first time.
The event has not been yet listed in the World Athletics Continental Tour calendar but with an official endorsement from president Coe, it will be included in a few days. Ace Indian javelin thrower Neeraj, along with JSW Sports and Athletics Federation of India (AFI), has played a pivotal role in getting the competition to the nation. Chopra has said that it was his longstanding dream to bring top-level javelin event in the country.
“I am sure that my fellow athletes and the fans in India will both create an experience that will be spoken about for a long time. I am excited to see how big we can make this,” he said in a statement. With the Diamond League men’s javelin throw event in Doha on May 16, it will be interesting to see when is this event staged in the same month.
