New Delhi: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia-led Ministry of Communication has been in the process of rolling out the new National Telecom Policy in the year 2025. The new policy will be a replacement of the erstwhile National Telecom Policy of 2012. The policy focuses on making India an export hub of telecom products while simultaneously connecting India through fibre optics.
The new policy aims to increase the share of Information and communication sector share in GDP to 11% from the present 7.8%. Additionally, the policy strives for attracting the annual investment of Rs 1.5 Lakh into telecom infrastructure.
The Government through its Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) is trying to make India a manufacturing hub in the telecom sector and as of now till 31st March 2025, the total sales of telecom industry amounted to approx. Rs 81000 crore out of which approx Rs 15000 crore of export has taken place.
“The NTP 2025 will be notified soon with aims and targets to be achieved by 2030,” officials was quoted by The Economic Times as saying.
The policy is expected to generate new employment in the sectors of 5G and 6G, internet of things, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, big data, and quantum communications. The policy targets the total coverage of 4G for the entire populace and ensures 90% coverage of 5G by the year 2030.
“The aim is to increase the fixed line broadband network from 45 million to 100 million households in the country,” an official aware of the matter said. There exists an additional plan in the policy to deploy one million Wi-Fi hotspots in the country by 2030 to ensure proper coverage of the internet.
The connectivity through Satellite Communication is one another aspect of the concerned policy. The policy aims to take into account the possibility of satellite communication becoming a reality in India as the government aims to mainstream the satcom for better connectivity. In this matter various satellite communication companies like Starlink, Amazon Kuiper, and, Jio-SES are expected to become mainstream in the coming future years.
