Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat 2025: Date, puja tips and how to seek Vishnu’s blessings

Mumbai: Observed with immense devotion across India, Nirjala Ekadashi is widely regarded as the most sacred and challenging among all the Ekadashi fasts dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Unlike other fasts where fruits or water may be consumed, Nirjala Ekadashi requires complete abstinence from both food and water — hence the name nir-jala, meaning “without water”. Devotees believe that observing this fast with sincerity brings prosperity, divine blessings, and liberation from worldly sorrows.

According to ancient scriptures, the origin of this vrat (fast) is linked to Bhima from the Mahabharata era, who observed this austere fast to compensate for his inability to follow all Ekadashis. This is why Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi. It is believed that those who worship Lord Vishnu on this day and perform certain spiritual remedies can attain peace and freedom from suffering.

When is Nirjala Ekadashi in 2025?

As per the Vedic calendar, Nirjala Ekadashi falls on the Ekadashi tithi of the Jyeshtha month. In 2025, the tithi begins late at night on 6 June at 2:15 AM and ends at 4:47 AM on 7 June. However, based on the sunrise timing (Udaya Tithi), the fast will be observed on 6 June.

Recommended Rituals and Remedies on Nirjala Ekadashi

To please Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi and receive their blessings, devotees should bathe during the Brahma Muhurat (early dawn) and perform a proper puja (ritual worship) with devotion. Offering a Shri Phal (coconut) to Goddess Lakshmi is believed to invite her special grace and remove obstacles from one’s life.

Remedies for Financial Gain

To overcome financial challenges and ensure a steady flow of wealth, devotees are advised to offer Tulsi Manjari (the flowering tip of the holy basil plant) to Lord Vishnu on Nirjala Ekadashi. This sacred offering is said to draw divine favour. Importantly, Tulsi leaves or flowers should not be plucked on the day of Ekadashi itself.

For Happiness and Marital Bliss

On this holy day, offering Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu while praying for happiness and prosperity is highly auspicious. Additionally, presenting kheer (sweet rice pudding) to Goddess Lakshmi is recommended, especially by unmarried women seeking a suitable life partner, as it is believed to enhance one’s fortune and marital prospects.
