Neymar Jr opens up on tough times and ‘grudges’ at PSG and new challenges

New Delhi: Neymar Junior has spoken about his difficult final years at Paris Saint-Germain, reflecting on the tense relationship with fans and its impact on both him and Lionel Messi. The Brazilian, now playing for Al-Hilal, admitted that while his early days in Paris were memorable, his time at the club ended on a sour note due to growing discontent from supporters.

After joining PSG in 2017 for a record-breaking fee, Neymar enjoyed success domestically, helping the team secure league titles and their first-ever Champions League final appearance. However, the expectations of fans and management intensified, especially as the team struggled to deliver European glory.

“For me, there was injustice, because I always gave my all on the pitch. I have no hard feelings, but I was a little sad about the way I was treated by the fans, especially when they came to my house.” pic.twitter.com/ZViIcJxULN

The backlash reached its peak when supporters gathered outside his home during his final season, demanding his departure. Neymar described the situation as “complicated” and revealed it left him deeply saddened.

The Brazilian also acknowledged that Messi faced similar challenges during his two seasons at PSG. Despite their combined efforts with Kylian Mbappe, the team only managed to secure domestic titles and fell short in Europe, exiting the Champions League in the Round of 16 twice.

Neymar believes the treatment they received was unfair given their contributions to the club’s history, including the memorable Champions League final run in 2019/20.

Neymar’s recent interview where he talks a good part about PSG was highly respectful and classy on his part.

Massive respect for him, especially considering how badly the Ultras treated him towards the end. Say what you want, but for me, he’s a true PSG legend. 👑🇧🇷 pic.twitter.com/qpLtC1Vqr1

Plagued by injuries in his later years, Neymar found his role at PSG diminishing, and both the club and fans seemed ready to move on. He eventually signed with Al-Hilal in 2023, where he says he has discovered a fresh start.

Although injuries have sidelined him until 2025, Neymar insists he has no regrets about his decision to leave Paris, appreciating the warm reception from his new club and its fans.

While Neymar admits sadness over how things ended at PSG, he holds no grudges, wishing the club success in the future. His focus now is on recovery and contributing to Al-Hilal’s ambitions, proving that even after setbacks, new opportunities can bring renewed happiness and purpose.
