Nick Kyrgios pulls out of Djokovic exhibition due to injury, in doubt for Australian Open

New Delhi: Nick Kyrgios has suffered an injury setback ahead of the Australian Open 2025, casting doubt on his Grand Slam return in the first major of the year. The Australian tennis star has pulled out of Thursday’s exhibition event with 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic due to an abdominal strain. Kyrgios took to social media to reveal he has suffered a fresh injury setback and will not play Djokovic at the event.

Kyrgios, who has not taken part in a Grand Slam since the 2022 US Open due to a string of knee and wrist injuries, revealed a grade one strain has been detected in his abdomen, forcing him to pull out of the exhibition match against Djokovic. However, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist said he will do everything he can to be fit in time for the Australian Open 2025 which is set to get underway on January 12.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play my good friend @djokernole this Thursday on the 9th. Will be resting and doing everything I can to be OK by the Aus Open,” Kyrgios wrote on Instagram as he confirmed he won’t take part in Thursday’s “A Night With Novak” event at the Rod Laver Arena.

1 singles match since October, 2022

Kyrgios made his comeback to professional tennis after a year at the 2025 Brisbane International which was played from December 29 to January 05. Kyrgios lost to big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, 7-6(2), 6-7(4), 7-6(3) in the first round while struggling with his wrist injury that had kept him on the sidelines. It was his first singles match since October 2022.

The 29-year-old partnered with Djokovic in doubles but the pair didn’t find much success as they bowed out from the second round. After a year-long battle with a wrist injury, there were serious doubts over Kyrgios’ professional career but his return at the Brisbane International sparked hopes of his Grand Slam comeback at the Australian Open 2025.

However, his latest injury setback has once again jeopardised his chances of taking part in the tournament. The fans will be hoping for a swift recovery for Kyrgios ahead of the start of the home Grand Slam, but as the tennis star has admitted in the past, the path to recovery is not going to be an easy one for him.
