New Delhi: Pakistan Cricket Board won’t take decisions hurriedly to avoid ruing them later following the team’s poor T20 World Cup campaign, chairman Mohsin Naqvi said on Thursday, adding that he would decide on skipper Babar Azam’s future only after a discussion with coach Gary Kirsten.
Pakistan were knocked out of the T20 World Cup from the group stage with defeats to India and USA, following which he promised a complete overhaul of the team as he felt it needed a “major surgery”.
However, he has now said he will speak to Kirsten, his assistant Azhar Mahmood and former players before making informed decisions.
“I have asked them (Kirsten and Mahmood) to come here as I want to talk to them in person and in detail based on Kirsten’s report on the World Cup,” he said.
“Kirsten has given a very detailed report on the team and it will help us a lot to chalk out our future course of action.
“No decision taken so far related to Babar Azam. One former player has submitted a very comprehensive report on what needs to be done to improve cricket. But I will take no decisions out of anger or based on what is being said on social media.
“Decisions taken out of haste and anger generally lead to more complications and I don’t want that in our cricket,” he added.
Naqvi also reminded that he has been at the helm for only four months hence it is prudent to seek suggestions rather than jump to conclusions, which is why he has been in touch with only those former players sincerely want betterment of Pakistan cricket.
“I have been in the board for four months and I am looking at everything and believe me there is a lot to be done to improve things within the PCB besides the team. But I don’t want to jump to conclusions and make hasty decisions.”
Babar seeks tips from power-hitting coach
After receiving a lot of criticism for his style of captaincy and inability to bat like a pinch hitter at the T20 World Cup, Babar has now sought help from renowned power-hitting coach Shannon Young.
The top-order batter could make made 120 runs from four matches at a strike-rate of 101 and met Australian Young, who has earlier worked with Glenn Maxwell and Jake Fraser-McGurk, in Lahore.
Young often gets credit for improving the power hitting ability of several Aussie batters, as exemplified by McGurk on his IPL debut for Delhi Capitals.
Babar has received criticism for maintaining a low strike-rate and struggling to hit sixes regularly in T20s, having a strike rate of only 129 after playing 123 matches.
