New Delhi: The wait for the official schedule of the Champions Trophy 2025 is expected to continue for another few days as there will reportedly be no ICC board meeting on Sunday, December 01. Multiple reports have claimed that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has agreed to accept a hybrid model for the premier tournament which is scheduled to be played in February next year.
As per reports, PCB has agreed to host the Champions Trophy in a hybrid model but has put forth certain conditions to the International Cricket Council (ICC). The PCB has asked the ICC to follow similar hybrid solutions for all ICC events that are scheduled to happen in India for the next three years. PCB has asked the ICC to ensure the Pakistan team doesn’t have to travel to India for the ICC events hosted by the country and that their matches are played at a neutral venue.
PCB has also demanded a greater share of ICC revenue for accepting the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy. However, there is still no official word from the ICC on the matter and a final decision on the venue of the tournament and its final schedule is expected to be taken in the next board meeting of the international cricketing body.
As per a report in Cricket Pakistan, there will be no ICC board meeting on Sunday. The meeting is expected to take place in the next 48 hours where a final decision on the future of the tournament will be made. A decision is also expected on PCB’s request for the hybrid-to-hybrid solution for future ICC tournaments in India.
The standoff between BCCI and PCB started after the Indian cricket board told ICC that it wouldn’t be sending the Indian team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. While PCB initially remained stubborn about hosting the entire tournament in Pakistan, it finally came down to agreeing to a hybrid model after a warning from ICC.
The ICC had warned the PCB that it was not possible to host the Champions Trophy without India and that the entire tournament would be shifted out of Pakistan if a hybrid model was not agreed upon. The warning came after ICC’s virtual board meeting on Friday which lasted only 15 minutes with no consensus on the final decision.
Everyone working to find win-win solution: Mohsin Naqvi
Speaking to Pakistani reporters on the sidelines of the India U19 and Pakistan U19’s match in the U19 Asia Cup in Dubai on Saturday, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said all parties involved are working towards a ‘win-win situation’ as far as the Champions Trophy is concerned. The PCB chief said they have presented their perspective and want to resolve the matter in a way that their pride remains intact.
“A lot is happening at the moment, and I want to ensure that nothing I say jeopardizes the ongoing process. We’ve presented our perspective, and India has shared theirs. Everyone involved is working hard to find a win-win solution, and above all, to ensure that cricket emerges as the true winner. The most important aspect is to resolve matters in a way that allows everyone to move forward with their pride intact,” Naqvi told the reporters.
