In a throwback to work practices before Covid struck, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has asked all corporate employees to work from office 5 days a week bidding goodbye to remote working as a general rule. Jassy, who succeeded Jeff Bezos as the boss of the US-based MNC in July 2021, shot off a communication to the employees on September 16.
The new regime of working from office will begin in January 2025. So far, the employees were required to attend office on a minimum of 3 days a week.
Experience of hybrid mode
“We’ve decided that we’re going to return to being in the office the way we were before the onset of COVID,” Jassy wrote in the communication. He also mentioned that the experience of working from office for 3 days a week have encouraged him to take the next step of ending remote working on all 5 days of the week.
The move resembles that of other MNCs such as JP Morgan Chase and UPS, which have also urged their employees to return to office for work earlier this year. Following the pandemic most companies switched to remote working not only in the US but in most parts of the developed and developing economies.
Flattening for nimblefootedness
Jassy has also revealed that they will flatten its org-chart by the end of March next year. “Having fewer managers will remove layers and flatten organizations more than they are today. If we do this work well, it will increase our teammates’ ability to move fast, clarify and invigorate their sense of ownership, drive decision-making closer to the front lines where it most impacts customers (and the business), decrease bureaucracy, and strengthen our organizations’ ability to make customers’ lives better and easier every day,” Jassy wrote to the company’s employees.
Axed 27,000 jobs in 2023
Last year too Amazon axed as many as 27,000 jobs in technology and corporate sectors all over the world. The management cut more jobs in Prime Video, MGM Studios, Amazon Web Services, Twitch, and health care operations.
