New Delhi: Mohamed Salah has cast doubt over his Liverpool future, declaring that this could be his “last year” at the club with no discussions yet initiated regarding a contract renewal. The 32-year-old Egyptian forward, whose current contract is set to expire next summer has made this revelation following Liverpool’s commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Salah expressed a sense of finality as he approached the game, treating it as if it could be his last at Old Trafford. “I was coming to the game, I was saying, ‘Look, it could be the last time’,” Salah said. “Nobody in the club talked to me yet about contracts so I was just like, ‘OK, I play my last season and see at the end of the season’. I feel I am free to play football – we will see what happens next year.”

Mohamed Salah has said that he will be looking to repeat the same in the coming years. His comment comes as a surprise, given his importance to Liverpool. He has been a pivotal figure at Anfield since his arrival in 2017. He has consistently delivered goals and assists that have been instrumental in the club’s successes over recent years.
In July 2022, Salah signed a lucrative three-year deal, reportedly making him the highest-paid player in Liverpool’s history, with weekly earnings exceeding £350,000. The Reds have even denied an offer from Al-Ittihad last September for Salah.
However, despite his undeniable impact, it appears that the club has not yet initiated talks to extend his stay beyond the current contract, which expires in the summer of 2025. When questioned about Salah’s remarks, Liverpool manager Arne Slot appeared unfazed but refrained from discussing contract specifics. Slot remarked that there were a lot of ‘if’ to answer before any decision was to be taken.
“At this moment, he is one of ours and I am really happy with him being one of ours, and he played really well. I don’t talk about contracts from players, but I can talk for hours about how Mo played today.”, said Slot.
Salah’s performance at Old Trafford was a reminder of his enduring quality and importance to Liverpool. He was involved in all three goals against Manchester United, continuing his remarkable record at the stadium. Salah has either scored or assisted 17 of Liverpool’s last 23 Premier League goals against United, more than any other player in the competition. Notably, he has scored 10 goals in nine appearances at Old Trafford for Liverpool in all competitions, becoming only the second player in Premier League history to score ten or more goals at a single away ground, following Alan Shearer’s tally at Elland Road.

Moreover, Salah’s goal on Sunday made him the first player to score in five consecutive Premier League appearances at Old Trafford. His exploits have propelled Liverpool to second place in the league table, trailing only Manchester City on goals scored.
Reflecting on the victory, Salah emphasised the significance of the derby and the need for consistency if Liverpool are to challenge for the Premier League title. “A great result,” Salah stated. “Everyone knows the derby is important for the fans and the city. We need to carry on, and if you want to fight for the league, you have to win each game.”
As Salah continues to excel on the pitch, his uncertain future looms large. Whether Liverpool will move to secure their talismanic forward for the long term remains to be seen, but for now, Salah remains focused on helping the Reds in what could be his final season at Anfield.
