North Kerala region to receive heavy rainfall, strong winds till July 31

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Metrological Department has forecasted very heavy rainfall till the 31st of July in most parts of Kerala. However, an orange alert is issued in Northern districts including Kannur and Kasargod. The weatherman has predicted that except the southern districts, all the central and northern districts is set to receive heavy to very heavy downpour (Between 11cms and 17cms) due to a low pressure that is developed along the western coast.

However, heavy rains and torrential winds have had adverse effects on normal life where hundreds of trees are uprooted and two small bridges have been damaged as water levels in rivers have risen and have overflown in parts like Thiruvambady, Mukkam, Thamarassery where the rains and strong winds have caused damage to properties mainly agricultural land.

“We are expecting heavy rainfall in Kannur, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts in the coming weeks. This is reflected across the south Canara region in Karnataka as there is heavy downpour still continuing in the region”, said Dr Mini, IMD official from Thiruvananthapuram.

Strong surface winds reaching up to 30 kmph gusting up to 50 kmph is expected in many parts of the state till 31st July, the weather department confirmed.

Alert issued in coastal Kannur and Kasaragod

Special caution messages are advised for the coasts of Kannur and Kasaragod due to the possibility of high waves. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Center has indicated that the sea is likely to become more turbulent, with high waves of 2.9 to 3.1 meters expected along the Kerala coast and 2.1 to 2.6 meters along the Tamil Nadu coast until 11.30 pm on Tuesday.  A high wave alert has also been issued for the coasts of Lakshadweep, Karnataka, and Mahe. Fisherman are advised not to venture into the sea in the coastal areas of North Kerala and central Kerala due to heavy rains and strong winds.
