Pakistan gets its new sporting hero as Arshad Nadeem wins country’s first individual Olympic gold

New Delhi: From the streets of Mian Channu in Pakistan to a historic gold medal at Paris Olympics, Arshad Nadeem fought all the odds to make millions of Pakistanis proud after bagging an elusive gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event. What made his historic victory even more special was that he managed to trump rival Neeraj Chopra, who bagged a silver, and win the India vs Pakistan battle at the Paris Games.

Arshad, who could not afford a javelin during the early stages of his career, launched a missile to set a new Olympic record with a gigantic throw of 92.97m in his second attempt, after his first one ended in a foul. Not only this, in his total 6 attempts, he breached the 90m mark for the second time during his last attempt. With his monstrous throw and Olympic gold, Arshad has etched his name in sporting history of Pakistan.

Arshad wins Pakistan’s first individual gold

The star javelin thrower bagged the first individual gold medal at the Olympics for Pakistan. Pakistan had never won any individual gold medal at the biggest sporting stage but Arshad broke the jinx giving his nation a first-ever individual gold. Pakistan’s last gold came way back in 1984 Olympic Games, when the hockey team clinched the elusive medal in Los Angeles.

Total Olympic medals won by Pakistan

With Arshad’s gold, the total medal tally of Pakistan has gone up to 11 in the history of Olympics. Pakistan now have four gold medals (1 individual, 3 hockey team), three silver and four bronze medals. Out of the total 11 medals, Pakistan hockey team has the history of being the most successful with eight medals while one has been earned in wrestling in 1960 and the other one in boxing back in 1988.
