New Delhi: An infuriated Pakistan might lobby against India’s bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2036, in response for refusal to grant permission to its cricket team to tour for the Champions Trophy.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has informed the International Cricket Council of the Indian government’s decision not to allow the cricket team to travel to Pakistan for the tournament that will be held between February 19 and March 9.
The ICC have informed the Pakistan Cricket Board of India’s stance. The PCB is now waiting for the Pakistan government’s directive on the issue, having already informed the ICC of their unwillingness to accept a hybrid model to host the tournament.
India have not toured Pakistan since 2008 due to security concerns arising from a long-standing geo-political conflict. Pakistan visted India for a bilateral series in 2012 and toured for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Pakistan are mulling several measures as protest including pulling out of the Champions Trophy if India’s matches, that are tentatively scheduled at Lahore, are moved to Dubai.
A move to Court of Arbitration for Sport is also thought of along with snapping all sporting ties with India.
“The government has also decided to lobby against India’s bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. The sources also indicated that Pakistan plans to formally communicate to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) how India has allowed political issues to overshadow sporting competitions, particularly in cricket,” a report in the Karachi-based Geo News TV Network said.
The PCB has sought greater clarification from the ICC over India’s stance and are reported to be gauging the situation before deciding on its next step, which will be done in consultation with the Pakistan government.
The ICC is yet to publicly speak on the matter.
