Pakistan unveil mentors for cricket teams of new domestic event

New Delhi: After his stint as adviser to the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman ended, former captain Waqar Younis has been named among the mentors of the five teams that will take part in the inaugural Champions Cup domestic tournament.

Apart from Waqar, the PCB has chosen Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Shoaib Malik to tutor the teams. They have been handed three-year contracts after a transparent and robust recruitment process, as per a statement.

Waqar, Saqlain and Misbah have all had experience of coaching the national team, with their stint beginning from the Champions One-Day Cup, to be held in Faisalabad from September 12-29 where all top players are obligated to participate.

Earlier, Waqar’s appointment as a consultant to PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi ended after a period of only three weeks.

“The board has also advertised the post of advisor on cricket affairs and now candidates who have applied would be interviewed,” a PCB source told PTI.

Apparently, Waqar didn’t re-apply for the post after asking for a short stint in the role before deciding on his future.

“But in his consultancy role, Waqar was clearly not comfortable and apparently some influential people in the board, linked to the Pakistan team affairs and international cricket matters, were also not very cooperative with him,” another source told PTI.

Criticism after loss to Bangladesh

Meanwhile, former cricketers have criticised the national team for their 10-wicket loss to Bangladesh in the first Test in Rawalpindi.

Former captain Ramiz Raja wondered how did the team opt to play without a spinner and then were unable to play opposition spinners like Shakib Al Hasan.

He also pointed out the dismal performance of the four-pronged pace attack, noting that their pace decreased as the match progressed.

Former keeper Kamran Akmal lamented and said that not even club-level cricketers play like the way they did in Rawalpindi.
