‘Pam’ The Office actor diagnosed with Triple-Positive breast cancer, know what it is

New Delhi: Our most favourite ‘Pam’, Jenna Fischer, The Office star, recently revealed on her social media that she has been diagnosed with Triple-Positive breast cancer. In her post, the actor opened up that she was diagnosed with Stage 1 Triple Positive Breast Cancer on December 1, 2023, after a lump was detected in her left breast.

Fortunately, she further noted that she is cancer-free now, but to spread awareness, the actor talked about the importance of annual mammograms for breast cancer screening.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer across the world and it is the number one cancer detected in women. In 2022, approximately 2.3 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer globally. While 670,000 died from the disease. According to reports, the lifetime risk of breast cancer may vary depending upon the company women living in developed countries have a higher risk as compared to women living in a developing country. But what is Triple-Positive breast cancer?

What is Triple-Positive Breast Cancer?

Triple-positive breast cancer is a type of breast cancer that occurs when breast cancer cells use estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and the human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) protein to grow. According to MD Anderson Cancer Center, Triple-positive breast cancer is a subtype of HER2-positive breast cancer, it accounts for about 10 per cent of all breast cancer detection.

But how is it different from normal breast cancer?

The normal breast cells have receptors for the two hormones, estrogen and progesterone. When these receptors attach to the estrogen and progesterone hormones, it also promotes cell growth. Moreover, some of the breast cancer cells use the hormone receptors to fuel the cancer to grow. This is also known as the hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.

Is it aggressive?

HER2-positive breast cancer develops too quickly and is considered more aggressive than hormone receptor-positive breast cancers. However, Triple-positive breast cancer is a subtype of HER2-positive breast cancer.

Symptoms of triple-positive breast cancer

A lump or mass in the breast or underarm
Breast pain or nipple pain
Nipple discharge
Nipple retraction
Skin dimpling on the breast
Swollen lymph nodes under the arm
Swollen lymph collarbone
