New Delhi: The Paris 2024 Olympics knockout stage was finalised on Wednesday evening and the fixture of the knockout stage will kick off on Friday. The men’s football at the Olympics began two days before the opening ceremony, with several high-profile nations showcasing their young talent.
This year’s edition has been a spectacle so far, with some tantalising knockout round clashes making it a must-see event going forward in the knockouts. Let’s take a closer look at which teams got knocked out of the Paris Olympics 2024 and which have made their mark and qualified for the knockout stage.
Teams that have qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics knockouts?
From 16 teams down to eight, the men’s Olympic football quarter-finals are here. The teams that have qualified group-wise are-
Group A: France and the United States
Group B: Morocco and Argentina
Group C: Egypt and Spain
Group D: Japan and Paraguay
Spain from Group C and Japan from Group D came into the final group games having already booked the berth in the quarter-finals, leaving six spots up for grabs for the remaining 14 teams to contest.
Hosts, France needed just one point to make it through the group stages before their clash with New Zealand to confirm their spot in the knockout rounds. They won by a scoreline of 3-0, making it three clean sheets from three matches to capture Group A and book the ticket to the next stage.
Argentina, after being denied an equalizer goal against Morocco in their opening match, made a strong comeback and won both matches against Iraq (3-1) and Ukraine (2-0) to book their berth in the quarters. Egypt, Morocco, the United States, and Paraguay took the remaining four spots.
The conclusion of the group stage gave us the ties of the next stage with the headline match coming in the form of Argentina taking on the hosts France. The clash between the two favourites to take home the gold will blow the race open as one of them home early.
Morocco will face the United States, who have qualified for the knockout stages for the first time since Sydney 2000, when they finished fourth after seeing off Guinea 3-0. Abde Ezzalzouli’s wonder goal helped Morocco win their last group-stage clash and sent them through as Group B winners ahead of Argentina.
For Morocco, it is history since they have never advanced past the group stages of the Olympic Games since participating with the Under-23s before Paris.
Spain, after qualifying for the knockouts, opted to rotate in their final group game against Egypt, but this got them pushed to the second spot following a 2-1 defeat while the Egyptians took the top spot. Spain will take on Japan who were also the first among Spain to qualify for knockouts.
Paraguay has booked a spot in the knockouts after a tense 1-0 victory over Mali. They have made it to the last eight of the men’s football tournament for the first time since Athens 2004 when they stormed the silver medal. A tough test awaits them as they face Egypt next.
Egypt will be hoping to better their multiple quarter-final runs and make it to the semis this year. They have always fallen short of moving ahead of quarters the most recent loss three years ago at Tokyo 2020.
