Paris Olympics: France’s meteorological agency issues heat warning for Tuesday

New Delhi: A heat warning has been issued for Paris and its adjacent areas during the ongoing Olympic Games on Tuesday.

France’s meteorological agency has said that the capital city might be hit with storms and temperatures of above 35 degrees Celsius.

A “yellow alert” — the second of four levels — has been issued adding that a heatwave would arrive from south of France.

The meteorological agency said the alert was issued as “very hot” conditions would linger across Paris overnight, with the mercury not expected to go below 22C between Tuesday and Wednesday.

An orange alert, which is the third highest warning, has been issued for parts of southern France with temperatures reaching close to 40C in some areas.

The agency added that yellow alert signifies that people should “be attentive” to the impact of heat when playing any sport or engaging in any physical activity.

The sweltering conditions would be most felt by players participating in outdoor events during the afternoon.

Beach volleyball, the BMX freestyle qualifiers and the women’s rugby sevens semi-finals are sporting events that would be held either partly or fully outdoors.

Wary of scorching conditions, several athletes had spoken before the Games about the need to change the event timings to take into account the physical toll of competing at high temperatures that increases the risk of heatstrokes.
