New Delhi: Punjab Kings (PBKS) have decided to part ways with head coach Trevor Baylis and head of cricket development, Sanjay Bangar. As per the ESPNcricinfo report, the decision was taken by the franchise board in a recent meeting.
Bayliss was appointed as the head coach of PBKS after IPL 2022 while Bangar became head of cricket development in December 2023. The franchise never won the IPL and finished ninth in the last season and eighth in 2023. The last time they qualified for playoffs was in 2014 and lost the final against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Bayliss guided KKR to the IPL title in the past and joined the Punjab franchise on a two-year contract. Another report also suggested that the franchise owners are not happy with the progress under Bayliss. They have made some big signings in the auction including Sam Curran and Harshal Patel but failed to produce results in the tournament.
Bangar first joined Punjab Kings in 2014 as the head coach and served till the end of 2016. After that, he was appointed India’s assistant coach in 2016 and joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2021 as their batting consultant. He was promoted to head coach role by Bengaluru and rejoined Punjab in 2023.
Bayliss replaced former India legend Anil Kumble as the head coach in 2022. Desperate to win the tournament, the Kings have constantly changed coaches in the last decade.
Punjab Kings appointed Ricky Ponting as the new head coach
Recently, Punjab announced Ricky Ponting as their new head coach. The former Australian captain has coached the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) across 11 IPL seasons.
Ponting said that he would make everyone aware that it’s going to be a different place and the management will not sit back and accept mediocrity.
“The biggest thing that I want to do at Punjab Kings is make everyone aware that it’s going to be a different place. We are not going to sit back and just accept mediocrity and finish down the bottom and have other people sit back and talk about the way the franchise is going. It is going to be more dynamic. And people are going to be talking about this team and this franchise in a different way than ever before” Ricky Ponting said in a statement.
