New Delhi: Former India cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner Madan Lal blasted Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) after 11 people lost their lives in a stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru amid the franchise’s celebrations following their maiden IPL title victory. 11 people lost their lives, and several others were injured in the tragic incident.
The incident took place on Thursday, June 04 as RCB’s title-winning squad arrived in Bengaluru to a roaring reception from the crowd. The players were felicitated in a ceremony by the Karnataka government at the Vidhan Soudha building before the team travelled in a bus to the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a felicitation ceremony was organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).
While the entire stadium was packed for the felicitation event, thousands of fans gathered outside the stadium, trying to get a glimpse of the players and force their way into the stadium. As the crowd became uncontrollable, chaos broke out outside the stadium, resulting in a deadly stampede. At least 11 people lost their lives, and the injured were rushed to the hospital.
Slamming RCB after the tragic stampede took innocent lives, India great Madan Lal called for the families of the victims to sue the franchise for their mismanagement and negligence. RCB went ahead with the celebrations inside the Chinnaswamy Stadium despite people losing their lives in a stampede right outside the venue.
“People will not forget this – or Virat Kohli. While people were dying outside, there was a celebration inside. It’s truly shocking and disheartening. The families of the dead should consider suing RCB and the state government for Rs 100 crore for this tragic mishap… BCCI is also shirking responsibility,” former Indian cricketer Madan Lal told IANS.
Following the tragic incident, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed the media in Bengaluru and revealed 11 people died and 33 were injured in the stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Siddaramaiah said the organisers were not expecting so many fans to turn up, and the security officials were hugely outnumbered, resulting in the situation getting out of control.
