New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi called shooter Manu Bhaker on Sunday to congratulate her over the recent achievement at the Paris Olympics 2024. The shooter from Haryana opened India’s medal tally with a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event.
With an aggregate score of 221.7 from 22 shots, Manu finished at third place in the 8-women final of the event. She not only ended India’s 12-year drought for a shooting medal but also became the first female shooter from the country to win an Olympics medal.
A video of Indian PM Modi’s conversation with the 22-year-old shooter has been circulating on social media platforms. The PM mentioned that Manu was the first woman shooter to bag a medal in the quadrennial event. He also recalled how Manu suffered a malfunction which forced her out of qualification in the same event.

Earlier in the day, Modi posted a congratulatory message on his Twitter handle for the Olympic medal winner. He wrote:
“A historic medal! Well done, @realmanubhaker, for winning India’s FIRST medal at #ParisOlympics2024! Congrats for the Bronze. This success is even more special as she becomes the 1st woman to win a medal in shooting for India. An incredible achievement!”
Manu Bhaker becomes fifth shooter to bag medal at Olympics
Manu Bhaker was in the top three right from the first stage, although she shuffled between second and third spots. After a series of 21 shots, the Haryana-born shooter was in second place with a tally of 211.4. But a 10.5 shot from Kim Yeji and Manu’s 10.3, paved the way for the South Korean to seal the top two places. As a result, Manu settled for a bronze.
She joined the likes of Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (2004 Athens Olympics, silver), Abhinav Bindra (2008 Beijing Olympics, gold), Vijay Kumar (2012 London Olympics, silver), and Gagan Narang (2012 London Olympics, silver) to win a medal in shooting at Olympics.
