Mumbai: The Prayagraj Mahakumbh 2025, one of the most significant religious gatherings in Hinduism, commenced on January 13, marking the beginning of a spiritual journey for millions of devotees. The grand event witnessed three Amrit Snans (holy dips) on auspicious days—Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, and Basant Panchami. During these sacred occasions, countless saints, sages, and pilgrims immersed themselves in the holy waters, seeking spiritual cleansing and divine blessings.
Following the third Amrit Snan on Basant Panchami, the revered Naga Sadhus and saints started returning to their respective akharas. However, two more significant bathing rituals remain—on Maghi Purnima and Mahashivratri. Although these two baths hold immense religious importance, they are not considered Amrit Snans. This raises the question: Why are these upcoming baths not regarded as Amrit Snans?
Why Are Maghi Purnima and Mahashivratri Not Considered Amrit Snans?
The Mahakumbh festival is deeply rooted in planetary alignments and astrological calculations. Amrit Snans are determined by the positioning of celestial bodies, particularly the Sun and Jupiter. A bath is classified as an Amrit Snan when the Sun is in Capricorn (Makar Rashi) and Jupiter is in Taurus (Vrishabha Rashi). These planetary alignments were observed during Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, and Basant Panchami, making these dates suitable for Amrit Snans.
On Maghi Purnima, while Jupiter will still be in Taurus, the Sun will have moved to Aquarius (Kumbh Rashi), altering the cosmic conditions required for an Amrit Snan. Similarly, on Mahashivratri, the Sun will remain in Aquarius, making the day spiritually significant but not qualifying it as an Amrit Snan. Despite this distinction, bathing at the sacred Sangam on these days is considered highly auspicious and is believed to bestow great religious merit.
Important Bathing Dates for Mahakumbh 2025

- Final Grand Bath: Mahashivratri – Wednesday, February 26, 2025
Significance of Amrit Snan
In Hinduism, Amrit Snan during the Mahakumbh holds a special place in spiritual practices. It is believed that taking a dip in the sacred waters during this time purifies the body and soul, washes away sins, and leads to salvation (moksha). Additionally, bathing at the Sangam on Basant Panchami is thought to bring the blessings of Goddess Saraswati, ushering in prosperity and wisdom.
While the upcoming baths on Maghi Purnima and Mahashivratri may not be categorised as Amrit Snans, they remain crucial in the spiritual journey of devotees. Millions will continue to flock to Prayagraj, seeking divine grace and eternal blessings in the holy waters of the Triveni Sangam.
