Premier League 2024/25: Everton collapse at home; Brentford blow Southampton away

New Delhi: Following Brighton’s draw with Arsenal in Matchday three’s early kick-off, five matches were played simultaneously as all three promoted teams were in action in the evening kick-off. Ipswich Town were playing host to Fulham, which would’ve been a welcome change for the Tractor Boys, having played Liverpool and Manchester City in their previous two games.

Southampton travelled to London as they faced Brentford in their game and Leicester City were hosting Aston Villa at home. Wolves, following a 2-6 battering by Chelsea in the previous matchday, travelled to Nottingham Forest in a bid to bounce back from that drubbing while Everton, who were still searching for their first points, welcomed Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

Wolves were looking to bounce back from their thrashing at the hands of Chelsea last week with a trip to Nottingham but the game didn’t start in their favour. For a second successive week, Wolves were a goal down within the first 10 minutes of the match. Chris Wood was left unmarked in the box following Elliot Anderson’s corner and the New Zealander headed the ball into the far corner of the net to give his side the lead. Wolves, however, responded immediately to going behind and were back on level terms, two minutes after conceding the goal.

Mario Lemina knocked the ball forward which fell perfectly for French winger Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and he unleashed a thunderous strike at the goal and the ball went into the top-right corner. The game remained pretty evenly matched till the end as both sides came up with plenty of chances to take the lead but neither could get the final killer blow. Wood had seemingly won the match late on with another goal but it was ruled out for offside and the game remained 1-1 till the full-time whistle.

Leicester City 1-2 Aston Villa

Aston Villa returned to winning ways after their defeat to Arsenal in the previous game. The visitors didn’t have a great start as star winger Leon Bailey was forced to come off injured in the 16th minute with Jacob Ramsey replacing him. Minutes later though, things got better for Villa as they went ahead thanks to a well-worked free-kick routine, which saw Ramsey cut the ball in front of goal and Amadou Onana finished the move off with a good finish. Onana’s second goal for the club meant they went 1-0 up in the break.

The second half started in the same fashion as the first and just after the clock hit the hour mark, Villa had the ball in the back of the net once again. Lucas Digne floated in a beautiful cross from the left which found Jhon Duran in the middle of the box and he looped a towering header behind Hermansen in the Leicester goal to make it 2-0 for his side. Leicester did manage to get one back through Facundo Bounanotte, whose powerful volley made it 2-1 but couldn’t find another. Villa got their second win of the season courtesy of the same goalscorers that gave them their first win of the season.

Ipswich Town 1-1 Fulham

Ipswich Town finally get off the mark in the Premier League as they earn their first point of the season at home to Fulham. The Tractor Boys have had difficult fixtures till now and the game against Fulham was a realistic chance for them to get some points on the board. They took the lead early in the first half through new signing Liam Delap. He was released by Leif Davis near the halfway line and he sprinted in the Fulham box to arrow a brilliant shot past Bernd Leno in goal.

Their lead didn’t last very long though, as Fulham made it 1-1 in the 32nd minute after Adama Traore finished off a team move to make it 1-1. Antoniee Robinson plays a low cross in the middle of the box towards Traore and he beats Muric from close range. Ipswich grew well into the game as it progressed and both teams had certain opportunities in the game that say both felt they should’ve won the game but ultimately both ended up sharing points.

Brentford 3-1 Southampton

Making his debut in goal tonight, new Southampton keeper Aaraon Ramsdale endured a horrible debut as his side lost the game 3-1 as Brentford just blew Southampton away. The Bees missed a lot of chances in the first half and looked to be headed to halftime in some frustration but fortune favoured them and Bryan Mbeumo put his side 1-0 ahead just before halftime. Kevin Schade’s shot hit the bar and it fell to the winger who put his club ahead.

It was the Cameroonian who was on hand to extend Brentford’s lead in the second half following a defensive mistake from the Saints. Mathias Jensen provided pressure on the Southampton backline to win the ball and played it to Mbeumo, who made it 2-0 for the hosts. Shortly after the second goal, Brentford made it 3-0 because of Yoane Wissa, who scrambled the ball into the goal after a long throw-in. Southampton scored their first goal back in the Premier League in the dying minutes of the game through Yukinari Sugawara, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation for the Saints.

Everton 2-3 AFC Bournemouth

Everton only have themselves to blame for this result as they gave up a 2-0 lead to lose this game 3-2 to Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth. The Cherries looked like the weaker side at Goodison Park with Everton finally showing some form this season. Or so we thought. Both sides played out a cagey first half with no real chances for either side and the game remained 0-0 at halftime with Everton’s new signing Iliman Ndiaye looking extremely lively for the Toffees.

The second half provided us with all the action as Everton took the lead just five minutes into the second half. Dominic Calvert-Lewin played the ball to Michael Keane, who fired a low shot into the bottom corner, far away from Kepa’s reach to make it 1-0. Calvert-Lewin turned from creator to scorer just a few minutes later with a neat chipped finish to make it 2-0 for Everton. The Toffees created plenty of chances and should’ve been further ahead but didn’t finish them off, which meant three goals in the final 10 minutes cost them the game and three points.

Everton collapsed late on in the game, first conceding in the 87th minute through Antoine Semenyo’s neat volleyed finish after he got on the end of Dango Ouattara’s cross. Bournemouth scored their second in 90+2′ thanks to Lewis Cook’s first-ever Premier League goal and the comeback was complete in 90+6′ when Luis Sinisterra headed past Pickford from a Justin Kluivert cross to win the game for his side.
