New Delhi: Wolves showed great fight and some tremendous spirit at Anfield but it was the league leaders who had the last laugh, getting back to winning ways after their Merseyside derby disappointments. There were no real threats from either of the two sides in the opening 10 minutes of the game before Luiz Diaz managed to give Liverpool a crucial lead in the 15th minute of the game with a rather scrappy finish in front of the goal.
Diaz ran forward and played the ball to Mo Salah after Diogo Jota made a deft turn on the transition, releasing the Colombian down the left. Attackers, defenders, and the goalie all missed his first attempt at a ball back into the box, but Diaz was there to follow up and bundle it into an empty net with his chest to open the scoring for Liverpool. A few minutes later, the hosts had the chance to go 2-0 up but Toti Gomes cut out Diaz’s cross-field pass for Salah after the break, but his careless movement caused the ball to sit up just right for Jota to score but Agbadou slipped in to make a vital block.
In the 35th minute though, Liverpool were awarded a penalty, after Jose Sa had no option but to commit in his own box and bring Diaz down. The penalty was converted by who else?, but Mo Salah, who slotted it home sending Sa the wrong way and making it 2-0 for Liverpool in the 37th minute. This meant that Liverpool carried a two-goal advantage in the second half.

Wolves produce a great fight
Right after the second half had begun, Liverpool found the net for the third time throughout the evening but the goal didn’t count. Salah was released by Alexander-Arnold’s first-time ball forward and he cut inside Agbadou to shoot, but the flag went up to properly declare him just a fraction offside after his low strike beat Sa to into the far corner. Moments later, Liverpool were awarded yet another penalty after The referee was forced to point to the spot after Gravenberch galloped over halfway and put in Jota ahead of him.
The Portuguese then cut inside onto his right foot in the box before being knocked down by a sliding Agbadou challenge. However, after the VAR check, it seemed more like a simulation from Jota as there was no contact whatsoever, and the ref ruled out the penalty. Wolves squandered their greatest chance of the game. Before playing in Joao Gomes, Cunha ran down on goal as Alexander-Arnold threw a poor pass straight to Ait-Nouri. He shifted back to his left foot, but he could only miss the far post with his strike because he delayed it.
However, the Wolves showed great spirit throughout the second half and finally, they were rewarded for those efforts. Cunha cut inside and curled a left-footed strike past Alisson’s reach, straight into the far corner, after Semedo and Bellegarde freed up shooting space on the edge of the box. It was 2-1 at Anfield, and as the game moved into its last quarter, Wolves had some hope after all. As the Reds held on, Cunha played a fantastic low pass to Tommy Doyle in the area, but Quansah blocked it brilliantly on his first attempt to hit Munetsi across the face. That was the final real attempt of the game as Liverpool managed to edge past Wolves.
