Premier League 2024/25: Liverpool obilerate Man City to go nine points clear

New Delhi: It was a dominant display by the hosts, Liverpool, who may have won the game by just two goals, but they were completely battering Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Anfield. It was truly a mind blowing performance by the Reds and they were relentless with every little move that they made upfront. Just five minutes into the game, Liverpool had their first chance when Gundogan cheaply gave the ball away to allow the hosts pour more men forward, with Luiz Diaz progressing forward and passing it to Cody Gakpo.

The Dutch international took a steady shot which was parried away by Ortega. However, he was flagged offside but the Reds certainly showed City what was waiting for them. Then in the 11th minute of the game, Virgil Van Dijk found his headed effort hitting the post after the ball was clipped into the area by Dominik Szoboszlai. City were all over the place and they looked rattled around their area as the towering Liverpool defender was unlucky to see his effort hit the woodwork.

However, it didn’t take long for the threatening hosts to take the lead as just a minute after that effort, Mohamed Salah played the ball into the penalty area after beating Akanji in the right flank. The ball found Cody Gakpo who tapped it past Stefan Ortega to make it 1-0 in the 12th minute of the game. Liverpool didn’t stop there, as they kept on threatening the City goal, and gave no breathing space to the defenders. City yet again looked extremely sloppy with their possession and had a numerous miss passes.

In the second half, Bernardo Silva’s back pass was not controlled well by Akanji, as Salah yet again pounced on to the ball to steal it, only to put his shot above the bar which was a big relief for Silva and Akanji.

However, yet another poor pass from Ruben Dias this time led to Liverpool being awarded a penalty after Luis Diaz was fouled by Ortega in the box. Salah stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake in putting it away, scoring his 11th goal of the season. City did show some fight in the second half before the second goal was scored, but it helped the reach nowhere as the match ended 2-0 in favour of Liverpool at Anfield. Now Pep Guardiola’s side are seven without a win, while Slot’s Liverpool are enjoying a nine point lead at the top.

What a fantastic game Mo Salah had against a team he loves to play against. The Egyptian King was everywhere on the pitch and despite the fact that some would say that he had a few big missed chances, the veteran did his job pretty well with an assist and a goal to his name. He managed to beat Manuel Akanji at the right hand side to find the perfect pass inside the box towards Cody Gakpo, who scored the first goal of the match.

Then Salah scored one himself as he managed to slot it home from the spot, to give Liverpool a 2-0 lead when City looked like they were building their own rhythm. In the end, he played a massive part in Liverpool’s win tonight, and deserved to be named as player of the match.

Liverpool managed to beat Manchester City, 2-0 to extend their advantage to nine points at the top, while City’s winless run extends to seven games now.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
