New Delhi: The Premier League returned from the International break on Saturday with a goal galore in Tottenham Hotspur’s 4-1 win over West Ham. As the five matches took simultaneously, ten teams fought out thrilling contests between them as the stakes went higher on matchday eight. Everton have taken their second win this season as they cruised past Ipswich Town.
After remaining in the limelight for the most part of the International break owing to debates regarding Erik ten Hag’s future, Manchester United won a crucial game to come to the top half of the points table. Aston Villa, though, had a nightmare start to the game; they fought right back to win the game with a margin of 1-3. Though Brighton and Hove Albion won a rather dull game against Newcastle, they have shown character of winning tiring games. Southampton’s 2-3 loss against Leicester City was one of the most thrilling games of the season, with Leicester stealing the second half of the game.

With Ipswich Town still looking for their first win since returning to the top-flight of English football, Everton put pressure early with Iliman Nadia scoring in the 17th minute after poor defence from the Tractor boys. Everton were able to double their lead when Dwight McNeil received a corner and turned to Michael Keane, who found the back of the net with a left-footed kick.
The second half of the game remained goalless as Everton managed to pick three points for the first time this season in an away game. Both teams didn’t create many chances as Ipswich remained helpless to break Everton’s backline. As Ipswich face Brentford next, they will have to improve the tactical issues that they faced on Portman Road.

Coming to the clash under pressure, both sides were looking desperately for a win at the Old Trafford. Brentford were able to go into the break with a lead through a final-minute goal after Mikel Damsgaard took the corner and accurately delivered it to Ethan Pinnock, who headed Brentford into a halftime lead. For United, it was yet another disappointing start, having failed to score in the first half seven out of eight games this season.
The second-half story was a complete turnaround for the hosts after Alejandro Garnacho ensured that a cross from the right by Marcus Rashford was volleyed into the goal with a fine side foot just two minutes into the second half. A 62-minute goal from Rasmus Hojlund following a flick from Bruno Fernandes ensured that United took home the three points they were so desperately looking for. They are now tenth in the table while Brentford have been pushed down to 12th.

The scoreline was level at Craven Cottage after Fulham scored in the fifth minute of the game when Raul Jimenez picked an easy straight pass from Bernd Leno and broke the deadlock. However, only eight minutes later, Aston Villa equalised with a fantastic strike from Morgan Rogers with a brilliant low pass from Jacob Ramsey.
The second half began with Ollie Watkins putting the Villans ahead with a header from near the post when Youri Tielemans curled cross found the English forward in the right place. Joachin Andersen was soon given a red card for a foul on Watkins. Issa Diop, the substitute, scored an own goal after jabbing into a low pass from Lucas Digne. The win gives Villa back-to-back wins, placing them fourth in the points table.

Despite Newcastle putting Brighton and Hove Albion under pressure, the visitors were defiant. Danny Welbeck then put them ahead in the 35th minute with an amazing collaboration with Georgino Rutter. Sliding into the goal, Welbeck helped Brighton go back into the dressing in a better position than the hosts.
Brighton began their second half with a lot of pressure on Newcastle and the performance of the players spoke volumes of the heat they were facing. For the most part of the game, Newcastle were unable to utilise opportunities, with Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes all making a hash of scoring opportunities. After Welbeck suffered a back injury, Newcastle couldn’t take advantage even in the added nine minutes to the full-time, giving Brighton the full three points.

Southampton were impressive in the first half as they scored twice to go into the break with the game tilted towards their side. Conceding a goal in the eight-minute from the foot of Cameron Archer meant Leicester City were on the back foot early. With an early lead, Southampton pressed and scored their second goal just 20 minutes later, with Joe Aribo converting Kyle Walkers-Peter’s amazing build-up that put Southampton again on Leicester City’s box.
Southampton couldn’t keep the momentum towards their side as Leicester City came out a different side in the second half, with Abdul Fatawu walking past Southampton’s weak defence look before Facundo Buonanotte drove the ball home. Ten minutes later, Jamie Vardy had helped Leicester score the equaliser through a penalty. The final goal came deep in the extra time from Jordan Ayew’s boot after the hosts were reduced to just ten men on the ground following Ryan Fraser’s red card. Southampton literally handed over three points that were theirs for until the 64th minute of the game.
