Premier League: Omar Marmoush helps Man City win, Nottingham humbled by Fulham

New Delhi: Premier League has returned after a gap of two weeks with Brighton and Hove Albion starting the gameweek with a 3-0 win over Chelsea on Friday. Earlier on Saturday, Arsenal claimed a 2-0 win against Leicester City after a late brace from Mikel Merino. Saturday games continued with five games being played in the same time frame.

Manchester City hosted Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium, starting the weekend in fifth place. West Ham clashed with Brentford at the London Stadium. Bottom-placed Southampton faced Bournemouth following their second win in the Premier League. Aston Villa faced relegation-placed Ipswich Town. Title contender Nottingham Forest paid a visit to Fulham.

Manchester City 3-0 Newcastle United

Manchester City both were cautious at the start of the game until Omar Marmoush broke the deadlock in the 19th minute after Ederson played a through ball for the new signing who went past an out-of-the-box Martin Dubravka. Five minutes later Marmoush scored a right-footed goal with Ilkay Gundogan managing to drive through the space. The Egypt international’s hat trick came when Savinho’s amazing run was followed by a low cross to Marmoush who easily found the back of the net.

After a long time, Man City were playing to their full strength as they returned from the break equally hungry for more. The team was creating chances and was a reminder of why they have been reigning champions for the last four seasons. The fourth goal came in the 84th minute from James McAtee’s foot after Erling Haaland flicked him a Gundogan’s corner.

Playing Marmoush as a number ten rather than an attacking midfielder, brought out the desired results as well, as he linked well with Haaland. City were less open in the back which has seen them concede a lot of times despite an early lead, with defense ensuring that they didn’t concede. Even Ederson had a good outing following a poor display against Real Madrid earlier in the week.

West Ham 0-1 Brentford

Brentford went ahead early against West Ham after Kevin Schade scored in the fourth minute after Alphonse Areola managed to defend the first attempt but failed to stop the second strike. However, Brentford would be disappointed with the scoreline still with Bryan Mbeumo coming close on a few occasions, while Yoane Wissa’s efforts got disallowed on two occasions.

Coming back to the second half, Wet Ham were a much more dominating side in the game coming out with three substitutions. However, the Hammers never managed to break through the Bees’ defences and Brentford took their third consecutive away win in the Premier League. They maintain their 11th place in the points table as West Ham lost a second time in a row in the competition.

Southampton 1-3 Bournemouth

Southampton didn’t have the ideal start to the weekend after Dango Ouattara headed Bournemouth’s first goal in the 14th minute of the game from Ryan Christie’s brilliant cross from the left. The visitors were constantly pressing and the Saints had no answer for the Cherries. Two minutes later Christie himself got on the scoresheet with a low shot goal from Justin Kluivert’s simple pass.

In the second half, Bournemouth kept threatening the Southampton box in their effort to secure themselves the three points. Kamaldeen Sulemana though briefly reignited Southampton’s hopes after he struck a low shot into the box from Paul Onuachu’s pass in the box. However, Marcus Tavernier scored in the 83rd minute, putting away any hopes for the Saints to take home a single point.

Aston Villa 2-1 Ipswich Town

Aston Villa came to the draw having gone winless in their last four games in the top tier, hosting Ipswich Town. However, the Tractor Boys managed to defend well and even got on the offensive a couple of times. Axel Tuanzebe got booked a second time and right before the break was sent off the field, making Ipswich field just ten men in the field.

Liam Delap broke the deadlock in the 56th minute after he slipped past two of the defenders to find Omari Hutchinson’s cross which he easily put away into the net. With a chance of losing on a single point, Villa scored back in the 69th minute after ollie Watkins managed to score from a rebound.

Fulham 2-1  Nottingham Forest

Fulham got an early lead in their home fixture after Emile Smith Rowe headed from Adama Traore’s amazing cross with his left foot. Right before the break, Chris Wood helped Nottingham Forest equalize after he managed to run past Calvin Bussey with Morgan Gibbs-White earning an assist. It was still Fulham who were looking more dangerous at Craven Cottage.

Fulham came back from the break with every intention of completing a double against the Tricky Trees. Bassey got on the scoresheet when a Raul Jiminez flick from the corner was headed by the 25-year-old. losing their second away game in a row in the Premier League, Nottingham never really looked like they were in control over the game. They needed to be more aggressive in front of the goal and though they remain in the third place, Nottingham will be dissatisfied with the performance at a stage where every game remains important.

Manchester City gave glimpses of their glorious past as they dominated against Newcastle with Omar Marmoush scoring a hat-trick. Nottingham Forest lose second away game in a row.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
