Premier League: Tottenham trigger one-year contract extension for captain Son Heung-min

New Delhi: Tottenham Hotspur have announced that club captain Son Heung-min, whose contract at the club was expiring at the end of the season will stay at the club for at least one year more after triggering the contract extension present in his current deal. The South Korean International will now be at the club till the end of the 2025/26 season at least, completing at the very least, a decade with the Lilywhites.

There was speculation over the future of Spurs’ long-serving number seven regarding whether he’ll leave the club after this season but the club have shut all those rumors down with this announcement. Son is one of the club’s longest serving players and is a modern-day legend for the supporters. He’s one of the last remaining remnants of the team that reached the finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2019.

We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to extend Heung-Min Son’s contract, which will now run until the summer of 2026 🤍

Following the departures of Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris last season, Son was handed the captaincy of the club and the role seemed to have elevated his performances for the club. In 36 games last season, he contributed to 27 goals in all competitions, scoring 17 and assisting another 10. Overall, he’s made 431 appearances for Spurs and is their fourth highest goal scorer of all time, with 169 goals to his name and is the club’s leading assist giver with 90 assists for Spurs.

While Son has been one of the club’s most consistent players during his time at the club, his performance this season seems to have been impacted by the club’s struggles this season. European football has become somewhat of a regularity for the club in the past few years but it seems like they might miss out on that this season considering their performances under Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs are currently sitting outside the top half of the Premier League table, as they have been for most of the season. They’re currently sitting in 12th place in the league having already lost 10 league games in the season, just two less than the 12 losses they managed in the entirety of last season. They’ve lost the same number of games as Ipswich Town, who find themselves in the relegation zone and all this have had an effect on Son’t performances.

The 32-year-old has contributed to 13 goals all season in 23 games which are good numbers but his inconsistency is evident. Barring the goals against Chelsea and Southampton in back to back games in December, Son hasn’t scored since the club’s 4-1 win over West Ham in October. Their poor performances has brought the future of manager Ange Postecoglou under scrutiny as well and reports in England claim that if Spurs get knocked out of the Carabao Cup, curtains might close on the Australian’s time in London.

Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur have triggered the one-year extension present in club captain Son Heung-min’s contract, keeping the South Korean International at the club till 2026.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
