R Ashwin has a special gift for his children on Daughter’s Day after Chennai heroics

New Delhi: Ravichandran Ashwin stole the show in India’s 280-run thrashing of Bangladesh in the opening Test held at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The game was wrapped on the morning session of the penultimate day itself, courtesy of the Indian spin duo of Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who rattled the Bangladesh batting lineup with their deliveries. Post-match, Ashwin had a special interaction with his family.

Ashwin held a special place in the Test, weighed in by the fact that he was playing at his home ground – one of the places he has grown up in. India went 1-0 up in the two-Test series and Ashwin was adjudged the Player of the Match for his all-round heroics in the match, notably hitting a hundred as well on the first day of the game itself. It was the sixth Test ton of his career and the 37th fifer in international red-ball cricket.

He bagged several records during the match as he went on to equal the legendary Shane Warne in terms of the number of five wicket-hauls in Test and is currently only behind Muttiah Muralitharan on the elite list. Moreover, he bagged a century and a fifer in the same Test match for a fourth time and is only behid Ian Botham. He did it all on Sunday, which also saw the marking of Daughter’s Day.

Ashwin, who has two daughters with wife Preethi Narayanan, had an interaction with them after the huge win where his wife first congratulated him and asked him what is he gifting his daughters on the account of Daughters Day. Ashwin said that he would be gifting them the ball he picked the fifer with. He was wicketless in the first innings but picked six scalps in the second essay.

One of his daughters didn’t like the idea of a ball as a gift and Ashwin asked her what else she wanted to which she said she didn’t know.

Ashwin’s family has a complaint

In the video that was uploaded by the BCCI, Ashwin was cheekily interviewed by his wife Preethi who first congratulated her on his achievement and asked how it felt to do it all in front of his home crowd. Ashwin said he feels great every time he comes to the ground and that he didn’t expect himself to get a hundred, that too on the first day, which according to him, happened too quickly.

Ashwin revealed that his family kept complaining about the first day when he got the hundred, that he didn’t say “hi” to them towards the stands. Ashwin said that it gets difficult to spot them while he is in the middle of the play but he always makes a conscious effort for it.
