New Delhi: Spanish tennis sensation Rafael Nadal, the ‘King of Clay’, on Thursday announced that he will call it quits from tennis after next month’s Davis Cup finals. The 22-time Grand Slam champion took to social media to announce his decision of calling it quits, saying that he was forced to take this decision due to persistent injuries in the recent time.
Nadal, who was undoubtedly one of the best players in modern-day tennis and an integral part of the ‘big three’ of the sport, including Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as the other two, said that he was very excited that he will get to finish his career at the Davis Cup, which is scheduled to take place next month in Spain.
“Really, everything I have experienced has been a dream come true,” Nadal said in an announcement on social media. “I leave with the absolute peace of mind of having given my best, of having made an effort in every way” The Spaniard indicated his decision was related to persistent injury problems.
“The reality is that it has been some difficult years, these last two especially. I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations. It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make. But in this life, everything has a beginning and an end,” Nadal said.
