New Delhi: Lakshya Sen scripted history as he became the first Indian male shuttler to reach the semi-finals of an Olympics after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen in his men’s singles quarter-final clash at the Paris Games on Friday, August 02. Lakshya made a strong comeback after losing the first game to eventually prevail 19-21 21-15 21-12 against the world no. 11.
Lakshya had become the first since Kidambi Srikanth to reach the men’s singles quarter-finals at an Olympics after defeating compatriot HS Prannoy in his last game. Continuing his stellar run at the showpiece event, the Indian showcased incredible resilience and grit to defeat Chou in a game that lasted 75 minutes and saw both shuttlers give their all.
Lakshya garnered praise from all corners for his brilliant victory against Chou as fans lauded him for becoming the first Indian male shuttler to reach the semis at an Olympics. India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav also heaped praise on the ace shuttler and wrote a heartfelt note for him on his Instagram story.
“Historic win! What a match! Let’s go Lakshya Sen,” Suryakumar wrote in his Instagram story.
Lakshya, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, made a strong start in the first game and gave Chou a run for his money but eventually failed to secure a win. However, he fought back in the second game to win 21-15 and force the match into a deciding third game.
With Chou looking tired and his reflexes slowing down, Lakshya continued his attacking game and showcased his incredible stamina to pull off one of the best victories of his career so far. The 22-year-old now stands only one win away from assuring a medal at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Lakshya Sen to take on Viktor Axelsen in semi-final
Lakshya will lock horns with reigning Olympic champion and world no.2 Viktor Axelsen in the semi-final as he aims to continue his unbeaten run at the Paris Olympics in his quest for a historic gold medal. Axelsen is heading into the semi-final having not dropped a single game in the tournament yet and Lakshya will have to be on top of his game to halt the Dane’s juggernaut at the Games.
