Rahul Gandhi to vacate Wayanad, Congress leader from Kerala to carry the baton

Wayanad: Following political deliberations and consultations, Rahul Gandhi has decided to vacate the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency and retain the Raebareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh. The decision has paved way for a re-election in the hilly constituency of Kerala which has elected the Congress leader twice.

The Congress party has also downplayed speculations that Priyanka Gandhi was planning to seek a mandate from the constituency. The party has maintained that a Congress leader from Kerala will be contesting the seat.

Discussion is already underway within the Congress party to finalize a candidate for the Wayanad Loksabha seat. KPCC president K Sudhakaran had requested K Muralidharan to contest from the seat, however sources indicate that Muralidharan was unwilling to contest.

Wayanad has been a Congress bastion ever since the formation of the constituency. It was MA Shanawas who was the MP initially, but later Rahul Gandhi took over the seat and thus turning the constituency into a high profile one with a national attraction.

“A name will be announced in the next one week and the Congress party will ensure that the landslide majority is maintained in Wayanad”, said T Siddique while speaking to the media.

Apart from Wayanad, by-election is necessitated in Palakkad and Chelakkara following the victory of Shafi Parambil and K Radhakrishnan who have contested from Vadakara and Alathoor constituencies. Both contested by vacating from Palakkad and Chelakkara.

While Palakkad is set to witness a triangular contest with BJP a strong contender, Chelakkara will be a major electoral test for CPI(M) following the massive debacle on June 4th polls.

After Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad town has always been a hotspot for the BJP where the Metro Man, E Sreedharan had lost to the UDF candidate Shafi Parambil by a slender majority of 3500 votes.

Having suffered a major loss in the Lok Sabha elections, the CPM leadership has finally acknowledged the urgent need for critical introspection and drastic course correction. At the party secretariat meeting on Friday, leaders were unanimous in pointing out the need to identify lapses and workout a strategy so as to emerge stronger for the 2026 assembly polls.

The Congress party has also downplayed speculations that Priyanka Gandhi was planning to seek a mandate from the constituency. The party has maintained that a Congress leader from Kerala will be contesting the seat.  Kerala States News India: Top News India, States News, States News Headlines, Online State News India, State Politics news
