‘Rare opportunity for me’: Washington Sundar on batting higher for GT against SRH

New Delhi: All-rounder Washington Sundar displayed his flamboyant batting skills for Gujarat Titans (GT) as they handed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) their fourth successive defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Monday. Despite boasting a massive home advantage, SRH continued to misread the conditions of their very own turf – the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, which resulted in their fourth straight loss.

Being invited to bat first, SRH’s batting faltered once again as the top-order rioters “Travishek” (Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma) departed cheaply, and even the middle order couldn’t contribute significantly to their eventual total of 152/8. GT, in response, took just 16.4 overs to wrap things up as they successfully chased the target with ease.

Shubman Gill played a skipper’s knock with his 43-ball 61 laced with nine fours while Washington Sundar, who was promoted up the batting order, came good against the SRH bowling attack, hitting 49 runs off 29 balls with five fours and two sixes. At the post-match presentation ceremony, Sundar said his captain’s advice was to take the game deep.

“Skipper kept telling me to play as deep as possible. Got off to a good start and wanted to finish for the team. This has been the trend in Hyderabad in the last few years. In the second innings, the wicket gets better and easier to chase 160-170 on the board. I was well aware of it and it helped me,” Sundar said. He also admitted that it was a rare opportunity for him to bat higher.

“Coach asked me to go in at 4 especially after we lost a couple of wickets in the early overs, rare opportunity for me and I loved my time in the middle.” It was GT’s third win on the trot in the IPL 2025.

Pat Cummins on fourth loss

SRH skipper Pat Cummins dissected the heartbreaking loss, saying, ” (It) was a bit skinny, but the Hyderabad wicket is a bit tough. A few early wickets and you are in the game. It didn’t spin much, there was a little dew around, but they batted really well. Their pace bowling was tough to play against today. SRH will face Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Saturday, April 12, in Hyderabad, while GT will be up against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Washington Sundar came in at no. 4 for Gujarat Titans during the run-chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad, proving match-winner for his side with a quick 29-ball 49.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
