Captain Vikram Batra of the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles became a legend by turning the slogan “Yeh dil mange more” from a soft drink ad into a battle cry during the Kargil War. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry award, after being killed in action at age 24. Known by many titles, such as the ‘Tiger of Drass’, ‘Lion of Kargil’, and ‘Kargil Hero’, Pakistanis referred to him as ‘Sher Shah’ after a formidable Indian warrior king. His most challenging mission was capturing Point 4875, where he led his team despite a high fever and died saving another officer. Before heading into battle, he said, “I will either come back after raising the Indian flag in victory or return wrapped in it.”

2. Lieutenant(now Colonel) Balwan Singh (18 Grenadiers)

At 25, he led the Ghatak platoon in a 12-hour ascent to Tiger Hill, taking a difficult route that surprised the enemy. In close combat, he killed four enemy soldiers despite serious injuries, prompting the rest to flee. He was awarded the Mahavir Chakra. Before the mission, he vowed with his soldiers, “Tiger Hill pe Tiranga fahrake ayenge, chahe kuchh bhi ho jaye.”

3. Grenadier (now Subedar Major) Yogendra Singh Yadav (18 Grenadiers)

Leading the Ghatak platoon, he continued fighting despite severe injuries, killing four enemy soldiers and silencing automatic fire, allowing his platoon to capture strategic bunkers.

His mission at Khalubar was to clear enemy positions to protect his battalion from daylight exposure. Leading his team with great bravery, he was shot on a ledge but managed to reach the top of a cliff, where he destroyed enemy bunkers before succumbing to his injuries. His heroic actions were pivotal in recapturing Khalubar.

5. Major Rajesh Adhikari (18 Grenadiers)

Major Rajesh Adhikari led a mission to capture a bunker at Tololing at 16,000 ft on May 14, 1999. Despite suffering severe injuries, he displayed exceptional bravery in direct combat with Pakistani soldiers. He succumbed to his injuries on May 15, becoming the second officer martyred in the Kargil War. His body was recovered 13 days later, along with an unread letter from his wife. He was posthumously awarded the Mahavir Chakra.
