Republic Day: The journey from a colony to a Republic

On August 15, 1947, India gained Independence from the yoke of the British colonial rule which was present in our country for almost 200 years. However, India did not have a standalone constitution at that time and its laws were based on the Government of India Act 1935 and the Constituent Assembly of India governed those laws.

On August 29, 1947, a drafting committee of seven members was formed to draft India’s Constitution and Dr. BR Ambedkar was its chairman. The committee prepared a draft constitution and it was submitted on November 4, 1948, to the Constituent Assembly. It was debated and discussed and finally, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of India on November 26, 1949. It came into effect on January 26, 1950, and India became a Sovereign, Democratic Republic.

Every year, Republic Day is celebrated to honour the democratic foundations of India. The main attraction of the day is New Delhi’s grand parade which is presided over by the President of India who hoists the Tricolour at the Kartavya Path. There is a display of military might, patriotic spirit and cultural diversity. The parade showcases the military prowess of India. Several states and government departments take out tableaux, and once the parade is over, the Prime Minister of India pays tribute to the fallen soldiers of the nation at the Amar Jawan Jyoti.

Who is the chief guest this year?
