Rohit & Co. script history as India achieve stellar Test feat after win vs Bangladesh

New Delhi: Local lad R Ashwin spun a web around the Bangladesh batters in their second innings to help India pull off a comprehensive victory by 280 runs in the 1st Test between the two sides at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, September 22. India scripted history with a huge win as they achieved a stellar feat in Test cricket.

Ashwin had reduced Bangladesh to tatters in their mountainous 515-run chase with three wickets on Day 3 and continued from where he had left on Day 4. A master of his craft, Ashwin ran through Bangladesh’s middle order to pick up another three wickets on Day 4 on Sunday to finish with excellent figures of 6/88 and bundle out the visitors for a low-key 234.

Resuming their second innings from the overnight score of 158/4, Bangladesh were skittled out for 76 runs in the first session on Day 4 with India’s spin duo of Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja running riot. While Ashwin was the wrecker in chief with a 6-wicket haul, Jadeja supported him well with a 3-wicket haul. Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto waged a lone battle with a fighting 82 but his efforts were not enough to take his team even closer to victory.

India script history with win in Chennai Test

It was a special victory for India in Chennai as it helped the hosts achieve a historic feat in the longest format. For the first time in Test history, India have more wins than losses in Test cricket. The victory against Bangladesh on Sunday was India’s 179th win in Test cricket. They have now won 179 Test matches and lost 178.

Before Sunday, India had as many losses in Test cricket as wins, but Rohit & Co. have now ensured India’s tally of wins is higher than their number of losses in the longest format. India have so far played 580 Test matches with 179 wins and 222 draws while one game ended in a tie. With 414 wins from 866 matches, Australia lead the list of countries with the most wins in Test cricket.

Ashwin, Jadeja star in India’s victory

Ashwin and Jadeja were the heroes of India’s victory with their all-round heroics against Bangladesh in Chennai as the hosts went 1-0 up in the two-match series. The duo combined to rescue India after a dramatic collapse in their first innings with a brilliant 199-run stand for the sixth wicket before making life difficult for the Bangladesh batters with the ball in hand.

Ashwin notched up his sixth Test ton en route to an exceptional knock of 113 runs while Jadeja slammed a brilliant knock of 86 runs as the duo lifted India from 144/6 to 376 in their first innings. Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill slammed centuries apiece to steal the show in India’s second innings before Jadeja and Ashwin combined to pick up 9 wickets between them in Bangladesh’s second innings to wrap up a huge win for India.
