New Delhi: The T20 World Cup 2024 final in Barbados on Saturday will not only mark the culmination of the prestigious event but also put an end to Rahul Dravid’s tenure as Team India head coach. The Men in Blue have been remarkably consistent in the last one year, having played three ICC finals and a combination of quality cricket and luck can earn them that elusive ICC title once again, which will be a perfect farewell gift for Dravid.
Dravid, known in cricketing world as ‘The Wall’, succeeded Ravi Shastri as the head coach of Indian men’s team in November 2021 and in these years has witnessed growth and immense consistency of the Indian team across all the three formats. India have been the vastly superior team in the ongoing T20 World Cup, just like they were in the ODI World Cup at home last year where they faltered at the final hurdle against Australia.
Time for perfect send-off
Now, Rohit and Co will face South Africa in the summit match hoping to win a global title after their triumph in the 2013 Champions Trophy and give a perfect send-off to coach Dravid ending more than a decade-old jinx of not winning an ICC trophy. This is the perfect time for India to bag the elusive title and quench their long-pending thirst.
How has India fared under Dravid?
Team India have performed very well during Dravid’s tenure as the head coach, making him one of the most successful coaches the side has ever had, barring a major ICC trophy. India have been the second-best team in the world after mighty Australia in Test cricket under Dravid’s tenure. Team India secured the Asia Cup title for the record eighth time last year. During his stint, India also registered famous series wins over England and Australia at home.
With Dravid as head coach, Team India has played 71 matches in the shortest format. The 2007 world champions have won 50 and lost 17 games. Two games ended in a tie while 2 produced no results. After taking over as the head coach in November 2021, Dravid’s Team India contested the finals of the 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship and 2023 World Cup. India sealed a semi-final finish at the T20 World Cup in 2022.
Interestingly, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut under the captaincy of Dravid in Ireland has grown up watching his idol play and deliver for the country. The skipper in a recent press conference revealed that he tried to convince Dravid to hold on and continue as the head coach of India but the veteran cricketer has made up his mind due to several reasons. While Saturday will mark an end to a fantastic global tournament, Indian cricket will cherish the memories of their head coach.
