Rohit Sharma joins Brian Lara in unwanted record as unlucky streak at toss continues

New Delhi: Indian captain Rohit Sharma has set an unwarranted record after losing the toss for the ICC Champions Trophy final match played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. This was the 12th successive toss Rohit has lost now in One-Day International format between November 2023 and March 2025.

Rohit joined legendary West Indies cricketer Brian Lara to have lost 12 tosses in a row. Lara saw this ominous feat between October 1998 and May 1999 in ODIs. Former Netherlands captain Peter Borren lost 11 consecutive toss in a period between March 2011 and August 2013.

Rohit’s streak of losing toss in ODIs started at the 2023 World Cup final against Australia. He then lost all three toss in the three-match series against Sri Lanka in August 2024. This followed with another three losses against England in the home series played in February this year. In the ongoing Champions Trophy, Rohit has lost five tosses, including the ones in the semifinal and final match. This takes the streak to 12 winless tosses in a row.

Varun Chakravarthy finds breakthrough for India

Varun Chakravarthy has been the man to go for India in terms of crisis-esque situation. The leg-spinner once again delivered in the final to break the cruising opening partnership of 57 runs between Will Young and Rachin Ravindra. Chakravarthy trapped Young before the wicket for 15 runs.

This was followed with the twin strikes by left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav. The Indian bowler first cleaned up Rachin with a wonderful delivery before getting rid of New Zealand’s talisman Kane Williamson by returning catch of his own bowling in the 13th over.

It was the moment of Indian spinners stamping up the authority with Ravindra Jadeja getting Tom Latham pinned before the wickets. New Zealand were batting at 156 for 4 after 36 overs with Daryl Mitchell (41*) and Glenn Phillips (28*) were batting in the middle (at the point of writing).

Rohit Sharma has created an unwanted record in ODIs, equaling Brian Lara’s feat. This streak, spanning from the 2023 World Cup final to the recent Champions Trophy final.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
