Bengaluru: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is standing on the brink of breaking a massive in the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, beginning in Bangalore on October 16.
Following the win against Bangladesh, The Men in Blue will continue their home leg with a three-match series. The opening Test will be played at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium from Wednesday onwards.
All eyes will be on Rohit & Co, who will be gunning to claim an 18th successive series win at home and in the process consolidate their top spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) table.
Meanwhile, Rohit is eyeing a major record in the series which will put him on the top of an elusive list.
Courtesy of his explosive cameo in Kanpur, the ‘Hitman’ of world cricket has reached 87 sixes in red-ball cricket. He now sits only three sixes behind Virender Sehwag’s all-time record of 90.
If Rohit manages to hit three sixes, he will equal Sehwag and if the India captain hits more than three maximums he can surpass the iconic dasher to become India’s greatest six-hitter in Test cricket.
Most sixes for India in Tests
Virender Sehwag: 90
Rohit Sharma: 87
MS Dhoni: 78
Sachin Tendulkar: 69
Ravindra Jadeja: 66
Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, sitting in the fifth spot with 66, has the chance to overtake Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. If Jadeja hits four more sixes, he will surpass the legendary cricketer in the most sixes list.
Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant also stands a chance to progress in the list. With 59 sixes, he is just behind Kapil Dev in sixth place.
The opening Test in Bengaluru faces a threat of a washout with rain lashing out the city on Tuesday, a day before Day 1 of the first Test. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rains and thunderstorms are predicted for the next few days in Bengaluru.
