Rohit Sharma to lead India on England tour, Shreyas Iyer to miss out – Report

New Delhi: Veteran player Rohit Sharma has made the cut in India’s squad for the upcoming tour to England while Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel have failed to find a slot, as per a report. The report has also mentioned that the fate of the Indian skipper will be decided finally in the next week when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rolls out the squad for the five-match Test series in June.

The Test series will begin in June and will kick start India’s campaign in a new 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. In their last Test series, India suffered a defeat against Australia thereby missing out on the WTC 2025 final. Before that, they had lost a home Test series against New Zealand 0-3.

Rohit to captain India – Report

Meanwhile, according to a report in Times of India, Rohit will continue to lead India on the tour to England despite the batter struggling in the longest format of cricket. In the Border-Gavaskar trophy, the Indian skipper just managed 31 runs in five innings and has scored just 155 runs in 13 innings between September 2024 and January 2025.

The report claims that Iyer and Axar have not been picked by the selectors while Karun Nair and Devdutt Padikkal are likely to be included in the squad for filling in the number 5 or number 6 slot to balance the middle-order. It has also been mentioned in the report that Sai Sudharsan is expected to feature in the squad as a back-up opener while spinner Kuldeep Yadav would also be included.

As far as the pace line-up is concerned, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah will surely find a place while doubts remain about the participation of Mohammed Siraj.
