Rohit Sharma to lead RCB? Franchise urged to target MI star as captain in IPL auction

New Delhi: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will be one of the teams on the lookout for a potential captaincy candidate in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. RCB are reportedly unlikely to retain Faf du Plessis, who has been leading the side since IPL 2022. The South African batter is 40 and might not be in the team’s plans for the next three years.

Ahead of the mega auction, former India batter Mohammad Kaif has urged RCB to go all out for Rohit Sharma if the Indian skipper is released by Mumbai Indians (MI) and make him the captain ahead of the next season. Speculations have been rife about Rohit’s future with Mumbai Indians ever since he was replaced as captain by star all-rounder Hardik Pandya last year.

Rohit was sacked from captaincy ahead of the start of IPL 2024 with Hardik taking over the baton. The move from Mumbai Indians left a section of the fans of the franchise disappointed while there were also reports of the dressing room being divided. MI will have a huge task in finalising their retentions after the BCCI announced the rules on Saturday.

With a total of six retentions allowed, it will be interesting to see if Mumbai Indians will keep hold of their former captain Rohit or if the star batter will be released. If Rohit is made available in the auction pool, a number of franchises will be looking to target the Indian skipper. Kaif believes RCB can benefit a lot from Rohit’s experience as a captain in the league.

“A player can be 19 or 20. But Rohit Sharma can turn a player from 18 to 20. He can grind out the best from a player, he knows tactical moves. So according to me if RCB get a chance, take Rohit Sharma and appoint him as the captain,” Kaif said on Star Sports, urging RCB to sign the Mumbai Indians star.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli together at RCB?

Rohit is one of the most successful captains in the history of IPL with five titles under his belt and is likely to trigger a bidding war at the auction if he is released by Mumbai Indians. If RCB manage to land the senior India batter it will also mean the superstar Indian duo of Rohit and Virat Kohli will play together for the franchise.

Rohit and Kohli recently combined to inspire India to a memorable triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024 earlier this year and the duo might end RCB’s wait for their maiden IPL title together.

A former India batter has urged Virat Kohli-starrer Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to go after Rohit Sharma and make him the captain if the Indian skipper is released by Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
