New Delhi: After he was axed as the captain for the fifth and final Test match against Australia in Sydney, it seems like more troubling is mounting on the experienced Rohit Sharma. Rohit has come under massive scanner and things are not at all turning in his way. Rohit was dropped from the SGT Test match amid his poor batting form and inability to fulfill captaincy duties.
While he has already retired from the T20Is and hasn’t been able to perform in the Test format, rumours have started doing rounds about his future in the ODI format as well. As per reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started looking for leadership alternatives who can fill in the big shoes of Rohit.
Hardik Pandya to replace Rohit as ODI skipper?
According to a report in MyKhel, it is being learnt that Rohit Sharma will be replaced by all-rounder Hardik Pandya as the skipper in the 50-over format. The BCCI has already started to explore some options and Hardik has come up as one of strong candidates, the report suggests. India’s next ODI assignment would be against England this month followed by the ICC Champions Trophy in February.
If Rohit is not able to fulfil his captaincy duties in the 50-over format, he would definitely come under scanner and relieved of the duties for the next summer. The Indian cricket board sees Hardik as a potential candidate to lead Team India most probably in the Champions Trophy 2025. The report additionally mentions that Hardik is an ideal choice for captain as he has the ability to deal with tough pressure situations.
The BCCI would be relying on a senior hand rather than going in for a youngster like Shubman Gill, who’s a talented player, for the big role. The England series will be a litmus test for Rohit to prove his might as a leader.
