New Delhi: Nine-year-old sensation Roman Shogdzhiev’s prominence in the chess world has become a testament to his extraordinary skills and talent. The Russian prodigy has achieved milestones at the tender age of just 9, setting an example of brilliance and focus not just in chess but across all the sporting spheres globally. Shogdzhiev has been a part of the headlines since the age of 6, when he became champion of Europe.

Meanwhile at just 9, Shogdzhiev made headlines after he became the youngest player in history of chess to secure an International Masters (IM) norm. This milestone has never been achieved at such a young age and seems hard to be broken. Russian Shogdzhiev beat the record of Argentine chess prodigy Faustino Oro by just a month. Shogdzhiev secured the norm at the age of 9 years, 10 months and 7 days while Ora had got to the milestone when he was aged 9 years and 11 months.

Shogdzhiev’s big mark in ELO rating

Apart from securing the IM norm, Shogdzhiev also became one of three players to surpass the ELO rating of 2300 before even turning 10 years old. The Arpad Elo rating system is a method of calculating a player’s skill levels in the game of chess. Meanwhile, the Russian sensation achieved the mark during the Radnicki Chess IM tournament that was held in December 2024 in Serbia’s Belgrade.

The Russian prodigy, who has been in news since last couple of years, finished the tournament in the second place with score of strong 7 out of 9 points. He finished behind Turkish-born Suat Atalik who secured 7.5 points. Back in  November 2024 he was declared world champion in the open category under-10, and an year before, he bagged the title of World Youth Champion Under-8.
