New Delhi: Mohamed Salah’s 400th appearance in a Liverpool shirt should have been one to remember, but it ended in a missed opportunity as Liverpool were stunned by Brighton. Cody Gakpo’s low cross only needed a simple tap-in but the Egyptian surprisingly side-footed the ball wide from close range and missed the chance to achieve the milestone.
That miss didn’t just cost the Reds a result as they lost 2-1 rather, it also delayed Salah’s bid to equal a long-standing Premier League record. If Salah had scored on Monday night then he would have matched the 47 goal involvements in a single season, a record held jointly by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.
Mohamed Salah is ONE goal contribution away from the joint all-time record for goals and assists in a single Premier League season…

Red-hot start fading in final stretch
No one would have doubted Salah’s ability to break that record in March. After scoring twice against Southampton on March 8, he had taken his tally to 27 goals and 17 assists in just 29 matches. He was in the kind of form that made people talk about the “best individual attacking season” in Premier League history.
But since then, things have taken a dip, as over his last eight league appearances, he has managed just one goal and one assist. The Egyptian striker remains stuck on 29 goals and 18 assists, just short of the historic milestone.
Arne Slot remains confident in Salah
Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot remains unshaken in his belief in Salah. Speaking after the Brighton match, he said, “The first thought when I saw the ball going to Mo was ‘This is a goal’. Because that’s what Mo does. But sometimes even he reminds us he’s human.”
Slot added that while these dips are rare, he fully expects Salah to bounce back soon possibly in the final game of the season.
Salah eyeing more glory
Despite the recent dry spell, Salah’s excellence over the course of the campaign hasn’t gone unrewarded. He is currently five goals ahead of Newcastle’s Alexander Isak in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot with one game remaining. It would take something truly unexpected to deny him his fourth Golden Boot, which would see him match Thierry Henry’s record haul.
Salah might have one eye on another prize, also the European Golden Shoe. Currently, Viktor Gyokeres leads with 39 goals but with the Portuguese season done, the Sporting striker can’t add to his tally. Kylian Mbappe is close with 29 goals, and Salah sits on 28.
Thanks to UEFA’s coefficient-based scoring system, which gives more weight to goals in tougher leagues, Salah could overtake Gyokeres in points if he scores twice against Crystal Palace on the final day.
Anfield awaits one final push
Liverpool will host Crystal Palace in their final match this weekend. With one more chance to make history, Salah will be desperate to get on the scoresheet. It’s not just about personal accolades but also about signing off a phenomenal season in style, in front of the home fans, and with another record in the bag.
With everything still to play for, Salah’s final act of the 2024/25 season could yet be his most iconic. And as we have seen many times before, when the pressure is on, Mohamed Salah delivers.
