Sachin Tendulkar shares special ‘offside’ wish for ‘God of offside’ Sourav Ganguly on 52nd birthday

New Delhi: Wishes flooded in from all corners as former India captain Sourav Ganguly turned 52 on Monday, July 08. Ganguly, who was given the title of ‘Prince of Kolkata’ by England great Geoffrey Boycott, is regarded as one of the greatest captains to have led India. Ganguly is credited with transforming Indian cricket with his aggressive captaincy during his tenure.

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar also sent a special ‘offside’ wish to his former opening partner Ganguly on his 52nd birthday. Tendulkar and Ganguly formed a formidable opening pair for India and opened the batting together for several years. They continue to remain one of the most successful opening pairs for the Indian team with 6,609 runs to their name together across formats.

Tendulkar decided to bring in the ‘offside’ angle in his unique wish for Ganguly, reminding fans of the ‘God of offside’. Ganguly was given the tag of the ‘God of offside’ for his impeccable strokeplay and near-perfect hand-eye coordination on the offside. Ganguly had immaculate timing and used to leave bowlers clueless in their planning with his strong game on the offside.

“Sending you birthday wishes from the onside, hoping they reach you on the offside, @SGanguly99,” Tendulkar wrote in a tweet for Ganguly.

The Tendulkar-Ganguly partnership

Tendulkar and Ganguly were the two strongest pillars of Indian cricket during their time with the Indian team. The duo led India to numerous memorable victories together. Tendulkar was part of the squad when India won the Natwest Trophy under Ganguly in 2002 after beating England in the final. The Master Blaster played a key role in helping India reach the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup under Ganguly.

Ganguly was appointed as captain of the Indian team in 1999, replacing Tendulkar, who didn’t want to lead the side after failing to find much success. While Tendulkar finished his ODI career as the highest run-getter of all time with 18426 runs from 463 matches, Ganguly is India’s third-highest run-getter in ODIs with 11221 runs from 308 matches.
