New Delhi: Every year on June 21, World Humanist Day is celebrated all over the globe. Interestingly, the June solstice is also observed on the day. As per Humanists International, this day gives us a platform to spread awareness of Humanism as a philosophical life stance and means to effect change in the world.
How was the World Humanist Day established?
Before the American Humanist Association could fix a date for the celebration of the day, different factions in the organisations had different opinions about it. While some wanted the anniversary of the founding of the International Humanist and Ethical Union to the the date of this special day, others preferred to observe a Humanist Day on dates which have immense significance to Humanism.
Finally, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the American Humanist Association and later the Humanists International passed resolutions which declared June 21 to be World Humanist Day. Interestingly, almost every year, June 21 is the day of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere and winter solstice in the southern hemisphere, an occasion which has great cultural importance in many parts of the world.
How to celebrate the day?
The celebration of Humanism on World Humanist Day differs from one region to another and also among local Humanist groups. People can arrange for simple gatherings like picnics or dinners to socialise and reflect.
There can be a publicity drive with extensive advertising to promote Humanism and bring more media coverage on this day. There are some Humanist groups which organise conferences on this day, and some arrange for introductory courses about Humanism. Also, there are lectures whose topics can range from activities of Humanists around the world to the individual, like open forums where people share their pathways to Humanism.
There can be public proclamations signed by an elected official which will state the importance of the day. It will be a great way to increase awareness and appreciation for the Humanist community. Also, some groups use the occasion of the June solstice to organise celebratory rituals with readings and music which drive home the symbolism of the solstice and the light of knowledge which dispels the darkness of ignorance.
