Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha: A tale of devotion, faith and forgiveness

Mumbai: On 16 April 2025, devotees across India are observing Vaishakh Vikata Sankashti Chaturthi, a sacred day dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Observed every month on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi (the fourth day of the waning moon), this fast is believed to bring relief from obstacles and attract prosperity, health, and happiness into devotees’ lives.

Falling on a Wednesday this year, the vrat is considered even more auspicious as Wednesday is traditionally associated with Lord Ganesha. According to the Hindu Panchang, the Chaturthi tithi begins at 1:16 PM on 16 April and ends at 3:23 PM on 17 April. The most favourable time to offer prayers to Ganapati Bappa is between 5:55 AM and 9:08 AM on 16 April. Devotees complete their fast by offering arghya to the moon at moonrise, which will occur at 10:00 PM. The offering typically includes milk, water, and white flowers.

Spiritual Importance of Sankashti Chaturthi

Vaishakh Sankashti Chaturthi holds deep spiritual meaning in Hindu tradition. It is believed that observing this fast and performing the prescribed rituals with devotion leads to divine blessings, particularly from Lord Ganesha—remover of all obstacles. The fast is incomplete without reading or listening to the Vrat Katha, a sacred story passed down through generations.

Vikata Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha

As per ancient legend, a Brahmin named Dharmaketu lived in a kingdom with his two wives, Sushila and Chanchala. Sushila was devout and deeply religious, often fasting and praying, while Chanchala showed little interest in spiritual pursuits. Over time, Sushila became physically weak due to her frequent fasting, yet she was gifted a daughter. On the other hand, Chanchala, despite not fasting or praying, gave birth to a son.

Mocking Sushila’s religious devotion, Chanchala boasted about her son. Hurt by her words, Sushila observed the Vikata Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat with full faith and dedication. Pleased by her devotion, Lord Ganesha blessed her with a son. Sadly, her husband Dharmaketu passed away soon after, and the two wives began living separately. Sushila raised her children in her husband’s home, and over time, her son became wise, prosperous, and respected, while Chanchala’s son turned out to be lazy and directionless.

Jealous of Sushila’s son, Chanchala once pushed him into a well. But thanks to Sushila’s unwavering devotion and the protective grace of Lord Ganesha, the boy survived unharmed. Witnessing this divine intervention, Chanchala realised her mistake, repented deeply, and sought forgiveness from Sushila. On Sushila’s advice, she too observed the Vikata Sankashti Chaturthi fast. As a result, Lord Ganesha blessed her home with abundance, and even her son began to change his ways.

Why Observing This Vrat Matters

This story is a powerful reminder of faith, devotion, and the divine protection offered by Lord Ganesha. Those who sincerely observe the Vikata Sankashti Chaturthi fast are believed to be shielded from life’s difficulties, and their families are blessed with peace, prosperity, and spiritual strength.
