New Delhi: India added a second medal to their kitty at the Paris 2024 Games after clinching a bronze medal in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team event. The Indian pair of Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh defeated heavy favourites South Korea 16-10 in the bronze medal match to clinch India’s second medal in shooting.
Manu and Sarabjot dominated the proceedings right from the word go, opening a 14-6 lead. But the Koreans bounced back with two series wins to give India a huge scare. However, the Indian duo held their nerves and crossed the finishing line to script history.
Both shooters played a crucial role in the Indian shooting team’s quest for an Olympic comeback. After returning empty-handed from the last two Olympics in Rio and Tokyo, Indian shooters have delivered the goods in Paris with two medals.
Bhaker has won both medals in shooting. The 22-year-old Haryana shooter continued her remarkable run in Paris and became the first Indian Olympian pre-independence to bag two medals in a single edition of the Games.
Good training facilities have helped Indian athletes to perform at the optimum level. The government has spent millions to ensure Indian athletes get the best possible facilities. After Bhaker’s bronze in the individual event, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya revealed the whopping amount the Indian government spent on her training.
Let’s take a look at how much was spent on Sarabjot Singh’s training.
Sarabjot, who hails from Dheen village of Ambala, Haryana, trains under coach Abhishek Rana. He had harboured hopes of becoming a footballer but the sight of kids aiming at paper targets with pistols made a lasting impact on his mind at a very young age.
Multiple Junior World Cup champion and Asian Games gold medallist Sarabjot was provided financial assistance of over Rs 20 lacs under the TOPS scheme and a whopping 1.26 crore under the Annual Calendar for Training and Competitions (ACTC).
