New Delhi: Seasonal allergies in children can strike at any time of the year, depending upon the allergy triggers in the environment. However, they seem to hit more frequently during certain seasons when some specific allergies are more prevalent. Ever wondered what you can do to identify these seasonal allergies in children? Read on to find out what a paediatrician has to say about the same.
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr Santosh N, MBBS, MD, Senior Consultant – Neonatology & Pediatrics, Jayanagar, Bangalore, shared some basic tips on identifying and treating seasonal allergies in children.
Ways to identify the triggers of seasonal allergies
An important part of managing seasonal allergies in a child is first knowing what allergens affect him/her. Common among these triggers are pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds, and mold spores. Tree pollens are prevalent in spring, while grass pollens are more common in late spring and early summer. Mold spores, however, do thrive in moist environments and hence could stay throughout but are usually rampant in the fall. Parents should monitor environmental factors that trigger allergic reactions in their kid and discuss them with the doctor for effective management.
Allergy management strategies
Minimise exposure to allergens: The best way to prevent allergic effects on children is to minimise exposure to allergens in the child to the minimum. Staying at home during the peak time of pollen is the best measure. The pollen count is usually maximum in the morning and on days when it’s windy. Keep the windows closed and the air conditioning on to reduce the amount of pollen coming inside the home. After spending time outside, bathe children or have them change to wash off pollen from skin and hair.
Medical Remedies: If children show any signs of allergy, one should immediately contact a doctor without wasting time. The doctor may prescribe some tips, medicines, or drops that could be beneficial in reducing allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and runny nose in children. Such drops may have the effect of reducing swellings in the nasal passage, hence providing relief from nasal congestion.
Natural Remedies: Saline nasal rinses are good for small children to clear allergies and mucus. Many doctors also prescribe some amount of honey for better immunity against pollen.
Conclusion
Seasonal allergies can cause many unique problems for children. Identifying triggers and implementing effective management strategies are essential steps in controlling symptoms. Parents can support their children by recognizing allergen exposures, ensuring proper medication use, and exploring natural remedies to alleviate symptoms.
